Prof. Justo AlonsoDear colleagues and friends

The first recording of human uterus activity during labour was obtained by Roberto Caldeyro-Barcia and Hermogenes Alvarez in Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1947. This proved the starting point for a major scientific field of research and development, which included the foundation of modern Perinatal Medicine.

Today, Perinatal Medicine is a leading scientific specialism that has and will continue to contribute to the health of mothers, children and families worldwide.

The World Association of Perinatal Medicine, founded in Tokyo in 1991 by Drs. Caldeyro-Barcia, Saling and Sakamoto among others, has honoured Uruguay by entrusting the Uruguayan Society of Perinatology (AUPER) with the organization of the 10th World Congress of Perinatal Medicine in November 2011.

The Congress will be held in the city of Punta del Este, one of the most exclusive seaside resorts in the Southern Atlantic, 130 Km from Montevideo, 1 hour flight from Buenos Aires, and within easy reach of the most significant tourist destinations in South America.

Uruguay, the smallest country in South America, ranks high on the Human Development Index, safety, education, environmental protection, communications and infrastructure, and has extremely mild weather. It also has outstanding natural beauty, gorgeous white sandy beaches, and extremely helpful people.

The event will be organized jointly by AUPER and the Uruguayan Societies of Pediatrics and Obstetrics & Gynecology, with the collaboration of our friends and colleagues from the Perinatology Societies of Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil.

We are preparing an exciting scientific program, as well as a first class social program to meet each and every possible requirement.

The change of continent for this Congress should add new and different lights to the world perinatal community, as the congresses from 2005 to 2009 are hosted by European countries. In 2011, the perinatal community will look south, to one of the places that gave birth to Perinatal Medicine.

Please put the date in your diary: November 2011, Punta del Este... Uruguay would love to receive you.
